Atkinson Breaks Ground on Sugar Liquefaction Mill

Atkinson Candy Company has broken ground on its new sugar liquefaction mill to help lower operating costs. For decades the Lufkin company produced its candy with liquefied sugar trucked in from Louisiana. Considering the cost of sugar has skyrocketed over the past few years, president Eric Atkinson said they decided to use granular sugar and liquefy it themselves. The sugar will be brought in by train on the company’s recent restored track behind its main building on Frank Avenue.
