AWMA Joint Industry Warehouse-Delivered Snack Committee at NCA Show
The AWMA Warehouse-Delivered Snack Committee (WDSC) held a successful reception and presentation this past Tuesday evening in Chicago. The reception was held from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at McCormick Place. Committee members invited retailers and wholesalers to attend, have a few cocktails and appetizers, and hear a brief presentation designed to help rethink the center store and the role of category management in order to maximize high-margin impulse opportunities in candy and snacks.
Candy and snacks are high-margin impulse-driven categories that contribute 72.3% of total center store sales and 69% of the gross margin dollars. These great categories combine to provide a billion dollar growth opportunity for c-stores by leveraging core SKUs and harmonizing assortment in the center store
.
Candy leads the way in category management-driven assortment decisions across all segments, leading to a greater focus on core SKUs, building assortment from the core out, and producing significantly higher true profit margins than the snacks categories.
Category management is the key differentiator between candy and snacks performance. In candy, there is a total category plan at segment level. In snacks, the majority of the category is managed by vendor and is lacking a broad category plan that leverages the brand strengths and margin opportunities in snacks.
Thank you to all AWMA members that attended.
