US Senators Seek Ban on Flavored Cigars
Five U.S. Senators recently sent a letter to Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting the agency to ban flavored cigars. The five Senators – Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) – note that the 2009 Tobacco Control Act gives the agency “the authority to regulate tobacco products and their flavorings, but FDA had not asserted its authority over cigars.” In the letter, the five senators stated that “cigars with candy-like flavorings such as strawberry, watermelon, vanilla and chocolate attract kids to smoking and help hook them on this addictive habit.”
