Vermont Considers $1.00 Increase in Cigarette Tax
The Vermont State Legislature is considering legislation that would raise the cigarette excise tax in that state by as much as $1.00 per pack. That is a tax hike of over 44 percent and that is on top of the existing $2.24 per pack tax bringing the total to a whopping $3.24 tax per pack.
AWMA has long opposed increasing taxes to this level arguing that such extreme taxes only promote contraband and black market sales of these products. And, such taxes are regressive, adversely impacting the lower income populations.
